How to Make Croutons

Print This Page

When you discover how to make croutons at home; you will never go back to store bought. I am totally serious!

The biggest "Oh My!" These delicious croutons are eaten before they ever make it to my salad!

This will be your go to recipe for stuffing mix too; it's such savory goodness.

Many of my "how to's" are born out of not being able to get these food items in the Philippines.
I have seen croutons here, occasionally; but, it's at a store that's 2 hours away, and they are usually stale.
So I say, "What's the point?" And, they cost double!

Homemade Croutons to the rescue! :)

This recipe makes a generous 1 cup, so you will have to adjust to meet your needs. Double or Triple it as needed.

2 pieces of whole wheat bread (use white if you insist, but the grainy goodness is so tasty in these croutons).
Olive oil
Garlic powder
Italian seasoning

1. Place 2 pieces of bread in shallow pan; brush with olive oil on both sides of bread.

2. Sprinkle lightly with garlic powder and Italian seasonings. Rub gently into bread. You could season more & use other seasonings if you prefer. Parmesan Cheese might be a nice addition.
3. Cut into cubes & place in pan on one layer with enough distance between cubes.

4. Bake in 300 degree oven for about 15 minutes. You will have to gauge your oven's heat the first time you make these.
Using a spatula, turn them half way through baking time.

They are done when they are dried out to your liking :)
Store in an air-tight container.

Use as stuffing mix.
Saute cut-up celery, onion & minced garlic in butter; add croutons & boiling water until moist. Season with poultry seasoning & sage, and salt & pepper to taste. YUM!
