Filipino Spaghetti

Print This Page

Filipino Spaghetti boasts a very distinct sweet, ketchup-y flavor, and highlighting Filipino recipes wouldn't be complete without paying mention to this cultural favorite.

McDonald's even includes this popular dish on its menu. My first reaction to that 10 years ago was, "Wow! Can they do that?!" :)

I feel I must say in honesty that I am not a huge fan.
This spaghetti is just too sugary for me.

Filipinos love it, so I hope you enjoy this authentic version :) from pinoyrecipe.net

1 kilo (2.2 lbs.) spaghetti noodles
1 - 2 T. oil
1 head garlic, minced
2 onions, chopped fine
2 green bell peppers, chopped fine
1/2 kilo ground beef
1/2 kilo ground pork
3 bay leaves
1 cup water
Salt & pepper to taste
1 kilo tomato sauce
1/4 cup white or brown sugar; most Filipinos don't like the taste of brown sugar.
1/4 kilo hot dogs, sliced diagonally
1/2 cup cheese, grated. For Filipinos, this is like a cheddar version.

1. Cook noodles per package instructions.
2. In stock pot, heat oil and saute garlic, onion, & green pepper.
3. Add ground meats, bay leaves, and 1 cup water. Bring to a boil & simmer for 10 minutes cooking the meat. Crumble meat as it cooks. Salt & pepper to taste.
4. Add tomato sauce & simmer another 10 minutes.
5. Add sugar & sliced hot dogs. Continue to cook on low for 5 more minutes. Remove bay leaves.
Serve over cooked noodles; top with cheese.
