Family Movies

We love family movies & movie night.
For the longest time, our Friday night ritual was to get
Papa Murphy's pizza-- Garlic Chicken & Pepperoni, and watch movies.
All my kids under one roof; boy, do I miss that!

With 3 out of the nest now, and just 2 home; it sure seems quiet,
but we still love Friday night movies. :)
Who am I kidding? We love Sunday afternoon movies too, or just about any time.

You can go right now to my Movie Store & not hear another word about it. Simply enjoy great movies. :)

A lot of our kids' life, we have not had TV reception... by choice, so we watched movies that we could choose and would portray good values -- values we wanted our kids to learn.

You'll find the family movies I recommend will be for the whole family; and portray love & care for one another with relatively no cussing.

Like any movie, all will have some drama that needs resolution, which may give a glimpse of someone that is less than appealing.
That would be my caution, but this will open up topics for discussion with your kids.

As always, the problem gets solved by the end of the film.
Of course, some of the real life documentation doesn't always end pretty, but again, is good for discussion.
And others, are purely entertaining.

There are so many great family movies out there; and, others that are complete trash!

Parenting with intention involves making wise choices in TV and movie viewing.
Why teach one thing & let the kids watch another?
It's counter-productive.

In my family movies store, I've compiled almost 150 movies, which would be great for the whole family.

Take a browse, read the reviews & make deliberate choices for your kids & family. It will be well worth your while.

Below I've highlighted some movies & grouped them loosely by age, but don't be bound by those parameters.
We, meaning my 17 year old son, 14 year old daughter, husband & myself, watched Disney's animated Fox & the Hound recently, and the modern version of Lassie, and we all loved them.
My son rated Lassie an 8; my daughter rated it a 10, so don't be afraid to live out of the box & consider a variety of styles. :)

With that said (about the movies), my kids aren't strange or weird --
they really aren't.
They're funny, respectful, caring individuals with imperfections like everyone else.
Sure, does my son enjoy watching every war movie known to man? Yes!
But, with 4 sisters, he's also watched his fair share of chick flicks.
And, has enjoyed all the movies I've highlighted below.

Please read the reviews that accompany the family movies within my store. Everyone is different & pick those that suit your family's interests.

To great family movies & hours of togetherness.
Julie

Family Movies: Pre-school

1. Veggie tales. These movies teach values like patience, kindness, love, friendship, and sharing; all with snappy songs to remember these great character traits. You'll be singing the songs too. :)

2. Follow That Bird. Your preschoolers & school-age kids will love this Sesame Street classic. Our kids loved this full length film and watched it often. We still sing some of the catchy tunes today -- "Easy-going; an easy-going day!" It's so comforting.

3. All the Disney Classics. Some of our favorites are Beauty & the Beast, Mary Poppins, Fox & the Hound, or Lady & the Tramp. All great & worthy of family viewing. In some Disney movies, the villain can be a bit scary, so watch that.

4. All the Pixar, Sony or Dreamworks movies. These are extremely clever & hilarious family movies. Adults can enjoy the humor because it's clever, intelligent & not foul. Some great ones are: Finding Nemo -- so funny; A Bug's Life; Toy Story; Madagascar; Open Season; or The Incredibles.

5. Mr. Roger's has some seasons on DVD, and are classics. He taught great values and care for people, while exploring life in his neighborhood.

6. Construction & Land Movers DVD's. I've included these in the Family Movies Store, because your kids (and you), will be intrigued to watch how these transportation giants work. Some titles are: Where the Garbage Goes, Diggers & Dozers, Road Construction Ahead, and Fire & Rescue-- to name just a few. These are excellent and entertaining.

Family Movies: School-age & Up:

7. Anne of Green Gables Series -- 1, 2 & 3. These are all worthy of every family movie library. Classics!
Anne's personality is contagious and the characters are well-developed and lovable. Anne is an orphan who is adopted by a spinster brother & sister who live at the beautiful Green Gables. Anne talks incessantly and finds herself in one predicament after another. Funny & very touching.
All three are wonderful, and at the end of the second movie you get to see if Anne & Gilbert end up together. :)

8. Chronicles of Narnia & Prince Caspian. These movies are based on the Chronicles of Narnia books by C.S. Lewis. Both are excellent and a moving salvation message is presented in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Aslan, the lion, plays the role of Jesus as he offers his life for Edmund's when a blood sacrifice is required. Aslan of course dies, but busts free from death & saves his people.
It was an incredibly touching portrayal. Not only do these movies have a great message, but they are highly entertaining and the cinematography is beautiful.

9. Road to Avonlea. Technically not a movie, but a TV series.
These can be purchased in DVD form, and are a spin-off of the Anne of Green Gables movies. This is a fun and entertaining series with some of the same actors playing the same characters from the movie, except for Anne's character. This series delves deeper into Anne's life in Avonlea.

10. Christy -- The Complete Series. Again, this was a TV series starring Kellie Martin as Christy Huddleson, a 19-year old who leaves the comforts of her home to teach in the impoverished, backwoods community of Cutter Gap, Tennessee in 1912. This was an excellent series portraying a strong woman & her adjustments to a different way of life. It appeals to the drama of the human spirit.

11. Parent Trap. We love the old version with Brian Keith, Maureen O'Hara & Hayley Mills, but the new version is excellent too. Lively & fun.

12. Yours, Mine & Ours. Again, we prefer the older version with Lucille Ball & Henry Fonda; a classic.
Actually, we had been watching & laughing with it for years before a "modern" version existed, so I'm really partial to the classic version. :)
You can find them both in the store at the link. :)

13. Lassie. This is an excellent modern version of the classic TV series. Thomas Guiry, from The Sandlot, plays Matt, an angry teenager who is forced to move to the country where his mother grew up. She has died, and a new step-mother has joined the family. Through a mishap, Lassie becomes their dog, and Matt begins to embrace the country & heal from his mother's death. This is a real action-packed film as a wealthy rancher doesn't appreciate the new folks "moving in" on his profits.

14. Pollyanna. This classic will warm your heart, just as Pollyanna warms the whole town when she moves in with her crabby aunt. Pollyanna, an orphan, always looks on the bright side, and changes the town as a result. A real winner :)

15. Cool Runnings. This is the true story about the first Jamaican Bobsled team to participate in the Winter Olympics. It's hilarious and full of drama. The late, John Candy, plays a former bobsled racer & their new coach.
It will have you rooting for the underdog :)

16. The Sound of Music. Oh my! The hills are alive with the Sound of Music! This is a classic that will captivate your whole family. A young nun becomes the governess for seven unruly children, while their recently widowed father is too preoccupied to pay attention. Until.... :)

17. The Man from Snowy River. This is the coming of age story of a mountain man. Jim's father has died, and he needs to earn the right to live on the mountain. While working on a ranch, he meets the owner's daughter & takes a liking to her, much to the chagrin of her father. He works diligently, but longs for life in the mountains. Jim is strong-willed, and sets about making a way in a rancher's world. It's full of good drama.

18. The Sandlot. Possibly one of the funniest & most clever movies around. We still watch it & laugh at the classic lines. Your family will love it. It's about a young boy who moves into a new neighborhood, and wants to join the boys who play baseball everyday at the sandlot. The movie follows their escapades & the kids that love the game of baseball.

19. The Little Rascals. Hilarious & adorable! This is the modern version of the old classic by the same name. Your family won't be disappointed.

20. Courage Mountain. This is a modern-day Heidi starring Juliette Caton & Charlie Sheen. Excellent & full of adventure. A teenage Heidi travels to Italy to attend boarding school. But the school is soon under siege by the army during World War I, and she must travel home. Through an unfortunate turn of events, Heidi & her friends find themselves trapped in an orphanage. They manage to escape, and attempt to travel home on foot. Quite exciting.

21. Faith Like Potatoes. This was a remarkable film -- one of my favorites, about a man who is transformed by faith in Christ and how that affects his daily living. He can no longer remain quiet and becomes thrust into preaching Christ during turbulent times in South Africa.
As a farmer, he preaches to his family and the farmers who are facing devastating crops & loss. A moving and touching true story of Angus Buchan.

22. Love Comes Softly Series. These movies are based on the bestselling books by Janette Oke. They follow Marty who finds herself widowed and in a marriage by necessity. She & her new husband trek across the American plains to the promise of a better life. These are very excellent family movies.

23. Rudy and Invincible. Both of these films are excellent true life stories, involving the world of football. Very inspiring.

24. Glory Road, Miracle, Radio and Remember the Titans.
These films all involve some sport & the team or coaches tenacity, and the drama of the human spirit. Highly entertaining.

Glory Road & Remember the Titans take place in the South when integration was being introduced in the schools, and the drama surrounding that event.
Miracle is the real life story of the USA Olympic hockey team in the 1980 Olympics.
All great family movies.

25. Any film from Feature Films for Families.
These films are worthy of mention, but are not available at their site. You will need to call & have a catalog sent to you. With that said, they produce excellent family films, and some of our kids' personal favorites. Mine too.
